That's why it's important to understand what mold remediation and restoration is and how it can help you as a homeowner.

What is Mold Remediation and Restoration?

Mold remediation and restoration is the process of identifying, removing, and preventing the growth of mold in your home.

This process is important because mold can grow in places that are difficult to see, such as inside walls, under carpeting, or in the attic.

It can also grow quickly, making it important to address the issue as soon as possible.

The mold remediation process typically involves several steps.

First, a professional mold remediation company will conduct an inspection of your home to identify any areas where mold is growing or has the potential to grow.

This may involve the use of specialized equipment, such as moisture meters or thermal imaging cameras, to detect areas of high humidity or moisture.

Once the areas of mold growth have been identified, the remediation process can begin.

This may involve removing damaged materials, such as drywall or carpeting, that are harboring mold spores.

The affected areas may also be treated with specialized cleaning solutions to remove the mold and prevent it from returning.

In addition to removing the mold itself, it's also important to address the underlying causes of mold growth.

This may involve repairing leaks or water damage, improving ventilation in the affected area, or addressing any other issues that may be contributing to high humidity or moisture levels.

How Can Mold Remediation and Restoration Help Homeowners?

  1. Improving Indoor Air Quality

In the event of a fire, it is important to be aware of potential dangers in order to stay safe.

First, be sure to evacuate the area immediately and get to a safe location.

If you are trapped, stay low to the ground where the air is cooler and less likely to be filled with smoke. If possible, cover your mouth and nose with a wet cloth to help filter the air.

If you must evacuate through smoke, crawl low under the smoke to avoid inhaling harmful fumes. Finally, avoid re-entering a burning building as it can collapse at any time.

If you have been affected by a fire, be sure to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

If your home or business has been damaged by fire, you need to hire a certified fire damage restoration company to restore your property.

A certified fire damage restoration company will have the experience and expertise to properly assess the damage and develop a plan to restore your property to its preloss condition.

They will also have the necessary equipment and resources to properly execute the restoration.

Any disaster can take a toll on a home or business but perhaps nothing is more devastating than the effects of a fire.

Fires usually strike suddenly and cause a wide range of damage, which can leave you reeling and unsure of where to turn for help. As desperate as you may feel, it’s important to know that you can turn to SERVPRO for the safest fire restoration services in the Denver area.

As beautiful as Denver is, it’s hard to think about something as awful as fire striking, but unfortunately it can occur at any time.

For the many residents of the area, it’s essential to have a professional restoration company to rely on when a fire occurs so that you know you’re in good hands.

Understanding The Full Scope of Fire Damage

Of course the immediate picture most people have of fire damage is burned and broken belongings, scorched structures and melted plastics caused by the extreme heat of flames.

Sadly, in terms of fire damage that only begins to scratch the surface. There is much more to fire damage and all of it has to be taken into consideration when performing safe and thorough restoration services.

Flames bring along the added hazard of smoke and soot, both of which can permeate surfaces and cause health effects. In order to thoroughly restore fire-damaged property, a careful and exacting cleaning process is required, using professional quality equipment and specialized training.

Professionals will also need to assess each item to determine if it is capable of being restored or will need to be discarded.

Surprisingly, when it comes to fire damage the single most harmful factor is actually water. While water is essential for putting out fires, it can also compound the damage to homes, businesses and belongings from the fire itself and may lead to rotting of support systems as well as mold growth and infestation if it is not addressed quickly and thoroughly.

There are many factors to consider when it comes to determining water damage coverage, but it is also one of the most important parts of any homeowners’ insurance policy.

You can begin to understand why having the best possible coverage is so important when you consider that one out of every fifty homeowners will file a water damage claim each year.

Of course, the amount of your deductible will affect how much you’ll get in return, as that cost will come off the top of your claim.

Also, the type of your policy can affect how much you can get in a claim.

Cash value policies only guarantee the current value of your property, taking wear and tear into account, while a

Replacement value policy will give you the full amount of a new item.

While specific policy prices can vary from company to company, when asking how much is water damage insurance the answer can depend on certain steps you can take to help reduce your costs.

You should always shop around and never be afraid to ask any relevant questions so that you can compare each company’s prices and know exactly what you’re getting.

In many cases, you can also save yourself money in the long run by raising your deductible

Since the amount you get from a claim can depend on how quickly you respond when disaster strikes, you can also help to save yourself money by hiring a professional water remediation company like SERVPRO.

Not only can SERVPRO address your water damage thoroughly with our trained professionals and high tech equipment, we can also help you file your insurance claim so that you can get the best possible result.

Who Should I Call for Water Damage to My Ceiling?

6/3/2022 (Permalink)

Techs arriving and unloading equipment "Like it never even happened."

Nothing is as troubling as the sight of water leaking from your ceiling.

If you’ve got a leak, or just have discoloration, bubbling, or other damage to your ceiling without an active leak, you need to take action before the water damage gets any worse.

When you’ve got water damage who to call can be the most important question of all.

The statistics on water damage are eye-opening.  According to the Environmental Protection Agency, leaks in the average household can account for nearly 10,000 gallons of wasted water every year (www.epa.gov/watersense/fix-leak-week), so even the most seemingly insignificant leak can eventually add up, and knowing when to call water damage professionals can make a huge difference.

So what do you do if you notice a leak or other water damage to your ceiling?

The common instinct for most people is to call their insurance company first.

Obviously, when you have water damage when to call insurance is an important question, but in most cases that shouldn’t be your first consideration.

Even the smallest amount of damage can be serious, as it may signal a much more widespread problem.

For that reason, your first thought when you experience water damage to your ceiling should be to address the underlying cause of the problem as quickly as possible.

The faster you stop the leak or otherwise cut off the water source, the better your chances of mitigating your expenses.

In particular, you need to know who to call for water damage in the ceiling, walls, and floors so that you can begin addressing water damage quickly in order to prevent the growth and spread of mold.

Mold can affect a number of surfaces, including drywall and ceiling tiles, and once it appears it can begin spreading within 24-48 hours.

With this in mind, the EPA suggests that certain actions, including removing and replacing damaged ceiling tiles, should take place within that period. (www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2014-08/documents/table1.pdf)

First Call the Pros

It is important that any water damage is addressed by a professional remediation company that is equipped to handle the job thoroughly.

Companies like SERVPRO have the training and expertise necessary to identify potential problems and take the proper steps to make sure that they are adequately addressed.

Using specialized equipment such as moisture meters, infrared imaging devices, heavy-duty dehumidifiers, and fans, the professionals at SERVPRO can detect water issues, stop them at the source and thoroughly dry out all surfaces.

They’ll also perform complete mold remediation to ensure that all traces of mold and fungus are removed from your home.

When to File Your Claim

Insurance coverage for water damage can be a tricky proposition, as not all types of damage are covered by most homeowners’ policies.

You will undoubtedly want to contact your insurance agent once the immediate emergency has been addressed and when you do you should be sure to have all the necessary information at hand to help determine whether your damage is covered and how much money you’ll be able to recover.

Be sure to fully document every step of the process, including taking comprehensive before and after photos and keeping track of all of the bills for repairs and remediation.

The more evidence you can provide for your insurance agent, the better your chances of having a positive outcome for your claim, but it’s not guaranteed.

Most standard homeowners’ policies only cover damage that stems from sudden problems, such as a burst pipe, and they won’t cover damage that results from the gradual wear and tear that occurs over the life of your house.

So if the damage to your ceiling resulted from a worn roof that you failed to maintain, you’ll likely be out of luck.

Don’t Get In Over Your Head

While it can seem overwhelming, when there’s water damage ceiling who to call can be an important factor because having the right response can keep you from ending up in over your head.

The important thing is to take the damage seriously even if it seems minor. While some damage may only require a quick DIY project, more often it is just a signal of more extensive issues beneath the surface and you need to treat the whole thing to keep the damage from the building.

When water damage occurs to your ceiling, don’t hesitate to call in the pros

A professional water mitigation company like SERVPRO can keep your water emergency from getting out of hand and help return your home to its original condition so you can breathe easier.

With their extensive knowledge of the industry, they may even be able to help you file your insurance claim to improve your chances of getting positive results.

So don’t let a water-damaged ceiling drive you over the edge, rely on SERVPRO to get to the heart of the problem, and prevent mold growth.

When you have water damage who to call to prevent disaster can be the first step toward restoring your peace of mind.

SERVPRO® of Denver North wants everyone in Whittier to be safe from fire damage this winter season. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), more fires occur during December, January, and February than at any other time of the year. Here are some heating equipment safety tips from the NFPA:

Fireplace Safety

  • Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from the fireplace
  • Have a three-foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters
  • Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional
  • Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month

Fire Safety Tips for Downtown Denver?

12/14/2021 (Permalink)

A fire alarm box is shown. We are trusted leaders in fire damage restoration in Denver.

More fires happen during the winter months than at any other time of the year in Downtown Denver. SERVPRO® of Denver North offers these fire safety tips from the American Red Cross:

  • Know how to operate a fire extinguisher safely
  • Remember to GET OUT, STAY OUT and CALL 9-1-1 or your local emergency phone number
  • Yell "Fire!" several times and go outside right away. If you live in a building with elevators, use the stairs. Leave all your things where they are and save yourself.
  • If closed doors or handles are warm or smoke blocks your primary escape route, use your second way out. Never open doors that are warm to the touch.
  • If you must escape through smoke, get low and go under the smoke to your exit. Close doors behind you.
  • If smoke, heat, or flames block your exit routes, stay in the room with doors closed. Place a wet towel under the door and call the fire department or 9-1-1. Open a window and wave a brightly colored cloth or flashlight to signal for help.
  • Once you are outside, go to your meeting place and then send one person to call the fire department. If you cannot get to your meeting place, follow your family emergency communication plan.

Our use of advanced technology saves our customers time and money! Here are some examples of the types of technology and equipment we use:

Damaged Pipes in Park Hill?

11/29/2021 (Permalink)

Old corroded cast iron pipes are shown. We are leaders in water restoration in Denver.

Park Hill is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Denver, and older homes carry the challenges of old cast iron or galvanized plumbing pipes. Over time, these types of pipes will corrode and fail. SERVPRO® of Denver North has been restoring water damage in Denver for many years.

Damaged Pipes

Check for cracks, bulges, water stains, and other signs of moisture on your ceiling or floors. If your water bill is increasing, you may have hidden water damage. Check crawl spaces, cabinets, and attics for signs of water damage, and insulate your pipes before winter begins.

To determine if you have hidden water damage, the Environmental Protection Agency suggests:

  • A good method to check for leaks is to examine your winter water use. A family of four likely has a serious leak problem if its winter water use exceeds 12,000 gallons per month.
  • Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, you probably have a leak.

Flooded Floor in Denver Business?

11/22/2021 (Permalink)

A fire sprinkler is shown mounted on a ceiling. We are leaders in commercial water restoration in Downtown Denver.

We were having a routine inspection of our building and offices. Everything was going as expected until one of the overhead sprinklers activated and began dumping water all over the desks and equipment directly below it. Yikes! The water was eventually shut off, but in the short time it took to locate and close the water shut-off valve, the malfunctioning sprinkler released about two hundred gallons of water into the room.

We called SERVPRO® of Denver North, and they sent out a team right away. They moved and dried all of the office furniture and used industrial-grade water extraction equipment to remove the water quickly. After that, they set up powerful air movers and blowers to dry the area. The drying process was monitored and documented. The drying process was followed by cleaning and deodorizing. Now our office looks and smells great!

Tornado in Denver?

11/15/2021 (Permalink)

A “tornado shelter” sign is shown guiding building residents to safety. We are leaders in storm damage restoration in Downtown Denver.

Colorado ranks ninth in the country for tornado activity, averaging forty-seven tornadoes each year. Although most tornadoes happen in the spring and summer months, October and November see a spike in tornado activity each year. SERVPRO® of Denver North responds to storm damage emergencies throughout the year and offer these tips on staying safe during a tornado from the American Red Cross:

  • Identify a safe place in your home where household members and pets will gather during a tornado: a basement, storm cellar, or an interior room on the lowest floor with no windows
  • In a high-rise building, pick a hallway in the center of the building. You may not have enough time to go to the lowest floor.
  • In a mobile home, choose a safe place in a nearby sturdy building. If your mobile home park has a designated shelter, make it your safe place. No mobile home, however it is configured, is safe in a tornado.
  • tornado watchmeans a tornado is possible
  • tornado warningmeans a tornado is already occurring or will occur soon. Go to your safe place immediately.

Flooded Basement in Whittier?

11/3/2021 (Permalink)

A flooded basement in an older home is shown. We are trusted leaders in water damage restoration in Denver.

Whittier is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Denver, and as with most older homes, basement flooding can be an issue. SERVPRO® of Denver North responds to water damage emergencies throughout the year and offers these tips from the Insurance Information Institute for protecting your possessions from water damage.

Protect your possessions

  • Store off-season and other bulk belongings in waterproof bins, especially in areas where there are plumbing pipes or that are prone to dampness, such as basements and attics
  • Never store valuables or memorabilia where there is a risk of destruction from water. Water and dampness also bring with it the threat of mold damage.
  • Keep belongings stored on shelving off the floor in basements. In case of water seepage or sewer backup, they’re less likely to get damaged.
  • Keep an up-to-date home inventory. Having a comprehensive list of your possessions will save time, trouble, and stress in case of loss from water damage.

Hoarding Situation in Skyland?

9/13/2021 (Permalink)

A home is shown with clutter in a room. We clean fire-hazardous clutter from homes in Denver.

Hoarding trouble in Skyland.

When my tenant died, I was left with a house filled with an amazing amount of clutter. It was apparent I had a hoarding situation on my hands. It was a miracle the house didn't catch on fire. I called SERVPRO® of Denver North, and they sent a team out to remove the contents and clean, sanitize, and deodorize the house.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, hoarding can put first responders in harm's way when they are responding to a fire or other emergency.

How Hoarding Impacts First Responders

  • Hoarding puts first responders in harm’s way
  • Firefighters cannot move swiftly through a home filled with clutter
  • Responders can be trapped in a home when exits are blocked. They can be injured by objects falling from piles.
  • The weight of the stored items, especially if water is added to put out a fire, can lead to building collapse
  • Fighting fires is very risky in a hoarding home. It is hard to enter the home to provide medical care. The clutter impedes the search and rescue of people and pets.

Hidden Water Damage in Highland?

9/6/2021 (Permalink)

Plumbing pipes are shown exposed inside a wall. We are trusted leaders in water restoration services in Denver.

Water damage hiding in Highland home?

My water bill was too high, so I knew I had a water leak. I tried to locate the source of the leak, but I couldn’t find it, so I called SERVPRO® of Denver North. The SERVPRO team arrived quickly and assessed and inspected the home looking for leaks. They used moisture detection and moisture measurement equipment to monitor the property’s moisture levels. Once they found an anomaly in the moisture content, they brought out an infrared camera to identify the location of the water through the wall. Sure enough, water had been leaking inside my wall and had caused water damage to the insulation and wood frame. Fortunately, the technicians were able to restore the water damage, and now my water bill is back to normal!

Moisture Detection and Measurement Equipment

  • Infrared cameras may be used to identify the water location for thorough water removal
  • Sensitive moisture detectors, hygrometers, and other meters measure the extent of moisture saturation

Denver Floods: Types of Flooding in Denver CO

9/4/2021 (Permalink)

Flood waters with leaves floating on surface covering lobby door We can help with any flooding situation

A flood is a type of natural disaster that causes severe flooding in low-lying areas and can occur anywhere, but typically occurs along coasts or rivers.

Flooding is usually contaminated with dirt and debris that seeps into homes as well as sewage and bacteria. The type of flooding that occurs depends on where the water is coming from.

Floods can be a huge problem in the Denver area, especially after an intense storm.

Flooding happens when water covers a large surface area and it comes from sources like rivers, streams, lakes or oceans.

Floodwaters can come from any natural or manmade source, and can be very damaging depending on the type of flood you have.

Floodwaters are divided into two categories: stationary floods and moving floods.

Moving Floods

A moving flood is a large volume of water that moves through an area at high speed like when a river gets out of its banks.

Floodwaters can be very dangerous because they may contain debris, chemicals and other pollutants.

Stationary Floods

A stationary flood is a large volume of water that covers an area like when rainwater collects in the ground or on top of buildings with nowhere to flow off to.

Floodwaters are not as fast-moving but still have the potential to be dangerous.

Floods are also caused by landslides, snow melts, dam breakage such as the case with Hurricane Harvey which was responsible for extensive flooding in Houston last year.

Floods are classified into two types: stationary and moving

Floodwaters can contain pollutants, debris, or chemicals that may be harmful to humans so it's important you have a Flood Cleanup Company come out right away.

We are proud to be the best flood clean-up and remediation company in the Denver area.

Our Flood and Water Damage Restoration Process

Since every flood and water damage scenario is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.

Step 1: Emergency Contact

Step 2: Inspection and Damage Assessment

Step 3: Water Removal/Water Extraction

Step 4: Drying and Dehumidification

Step 5: Cleaning and Repair

Step 6: Restoration

IICRC Training and Certification

We are IIRC trained and certified. The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) certifies and sets the standards for the cleaning and restoration industries.

Fire Extinguisher Safety Tips for Clayton?

8/11/2021 (Permalink)

A fire extinguisher is shown. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Denver.

SERVPRO® of Denver North responds to fire damage emergencies every year in Clayton, and we know that some fires can be contained by the use of a fire extinguisher. The National Fire Protection Association offers these tips for using a portable fire extinguisher:

Use a portable fire extinguisher when the fire is confined to a small area, such as a wastebasket, and is not growing; everyone has exited the building; the fire department has been called or is being called, and the room is not filled with smoke.

  • To operate a fire extinguisher, remember the word PASS:
    • Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you, and release the locking mechanism
    • Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire
    • Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly
    • Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side
  • For the home, select a multi-purpose extinguisher (can be used on all types of home fires) that is large enough to put out a small fire, but not so heavy as to be difficult to handle
  • Choose a fire extinguisher that carries the label of an independent testing laboratory
  • Read the instructions that come with the fire extinguisher and become familiar with its parts and operation before a fire breaks out

Water-damaged Bathroom in Whittier?

8/3/2021 (Permalink)

A handheld shower wand is shown. We respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Denver.

Vacation Washout in Whittier Home?

Over the years, SERVPRO® of Denver North has responded to all kinds of water damage scenarios. One Whittier family went on vacation for two weeks and came home to find the handheld shower wand had been left on the whole time they were gone, allowing the water to shoot up into the air and all over the drywall in the bathroom, causing severe water damage. Here are some tips from the Insurance Information Institute for inspecting indoor plumbing systems

  • Inspect appliance hoses and faucets.  Immediately replace any hoses that have cracks or leaks and replace them all every five to seven years.
  • Inspect showers and tubs. Check the seal and caulking around showers and tubs to make sure they are watertight and reseal if necessary.
  • When away on vacation, shut off the water supply to the washing machine. Never leave the house while the washer or dishwasher is running.
  • Know the location of the main water shut-off valve in your home
  • Install an emergency pressure release valve in your plumbing system. This will protect against the increased pressure caused by freezing pipes and can help prevent your pipes from bursting.
  • Check plumbing and heating pipes. Look closely for cracks and leaks and have any necessary repairs made immediately.

Urban buildings are shown in Denver, Colorado. We are a premier commercial restoration company in the Denver area.

Fire!

I was amazed at how quickly SERVPRO® of Denver North arrived when I called in my fire damage emergency. The electrical panel in my utility room failed, and the back of my office complex caught on fire. Fortunately, the Denver Fire Department contained the damage to the back portion of the building and extinguished the fire pretty fast.  After the fire department left, there was a mess to deal with. There was water from the firefighting efforts and there was soot and smoke damage left to deal with as well.

When SERVPRO® of Denver North arrived, they immediately conducted a thorough assessment of the damage and contacted my insurance company. They immediately began the cleanup and restoration process and supervised the repairs to the electrical panel and the back of the building. We were able to keep the office open while they worked, and they worked with minimal disruption to my employees.

March is the snowiest month in Denver, getting about 11.4 inches of snow each year. Here are some safety tips from the American Red Cross for staying safe AFTER a power outage has occurred:

  • Avoid electrical shock in flood areas. Don’t go into flooded areas or use any electrical equipment or electronics that may have been submerged. Have a qualified electrical inspector check the electrical system.
  • When in doubt, throw it out. If food is 40 degrees F or warmer, especially dairy and meat, throw it out. Ask your provider about using refrigerated medicines.
  • Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Keep generators, camp stoves, and charcoal grills outdoors only in well-ventilated areas at least 20 feet away from windows.

The Importance of Making and Practicing an Evacuation Plan

11/12/2020 (Permalink)

Hand writing an Emergency Evacuation Plan on clipboard beside Exit Door The best time to plan your evacuation route is now

Creating An Evacuation Plan Is Important For Your Business

A fire drill does not just prepare your employees for potential blazes. It ensures that everyone knows what to do in an evacuation situation. There are many reasons you and your employees may need to leave the premises, including:

  • Tornadoes
  • Floods
  • Hurricanes
  • Earthquakes

Ideally, you would shelter-in-place during one of these disasters. However, if the structural integrity of the building is compromised, you may have to abandon the property. You should thus come up with an evacuation plan and practice it annually.

Making the Plan
Before you conduct the drill, you obviously need to create your evacuation strategy. Start by figuring out how you will alert employees about the emergency. You can use a portable radio or public address system.
Keep in mind that the power may go out during the storm. To ensure that your alarm works at all time, you should thus have an alternate electricity source. You may also want to use tactile alerts in case you have any deaf or blind employees. You can test these alarms during the fire drill.
Similarly, you should make sure that all of the workers understand and can implement the plan. You can even designate one person as an evacuation warden. He or she will be tasked with making sure the escape goes smoothly.
Work with the warden to map out all the possible evacuation routes. The routes should be well lit and clearly marked. You should also assign one person the task of calling the insurance provider and the storm cleanup company once everyone is out of the building.

Testing the Plan
After you develop the plan, hold a fire drill to assess your evacuation strategy. You can even invite the Denver, CO, fire department to participate. Talk to managers and employees after the drill to find out what went well and what needs to improve.
Creating an evacuation strategy is an important part of the storm preparation process. Be sure to run emergency drills in advance so you can work out any kinks before the nasty weather arrives.

5 Steps To Take After Commercial Fire Damage

11/8/2020 (Permalink)

Replaced drywall, new drywall Fire restoration in Denver, CO

Commercial Fire Restoration Process

It can be difficult to keep your cool when a commercial building you own, lease or manage is on fire. Here are five steps to take during the critical period of time between extinguishing a blaze and the start of fire restoration.

1. Contact a Commercial Restoration Service
Get restoration professionals with experience working in commercial environments on site within hours after a fire. Scheduling a timely inspection and obtaining an accurate estimate are helpful for making a fire insurance claim.

2. Prepare To Make a Property Damage Claim
Documenting damage is the most important part of preparing to make an insurance claim. Take photos or videos of every portion of a commercial building affected by fire. Keep in mind that coverage may be available for indirect heat or smoke damage in addition to direct fire damage.

3. Mitigate Fire Damage
Board up any shattered windows, destroyed doors or breached walls. In addition to preventing the elements and debris from entering a structure, these are also good security measures.

4. Secure the Premises
Restricting access to a damaged commercial building until fire restoration takes place can help to keep down costs and manage liability risks. A combination of boards, tarp and fencing should go a long way toward discouraging most trespassers.

5. Start Cleanup Quickly
Fast fire damage and smoke cleaning can limit the severity of primary and secondary damage. It may be necessary to extract standing water left behind after suppression before eliminating smoke, soot and ruined materials.
These five pragmatic measures can guide commercial property owners and managers through the earliest stages of mitigation and cleanup. Relying on a one-stop shop for these services and fire restoration can also expedite the entire process and make it easier to provide insurers with an accurate estimate of the total cost to fix fire damage at a building in Denver, CO.

Minimizing the Risk of Water Damage During Construction

As a construction professional in Denver, CO, you know the damage that water can do to an unfinished project. Fortunately, a few basic precautions can prevent the need for mid-project water pipe repair and other damage control measures.

Potential Problems
Unfortunately, there are a multitude of ways water damage can occur during the construction process. The following are some common causes:

  • Improper scheduling
  • Plumbing issues such as a broken pipe
  • Loose building envelope

The above issues and other sources of water damage can generally be prevented by devising a construction plan that includes proper scheduling and excellent quality control at every step of the process.

Proper Scheduling
The construction schedule should take into account the order in which individual tasks are to be completed and the timeline for completing the entire job. If you complete building tasks out of order, you will likely run into water problems and delay the entire project. Although a professional restoration service can assist with cleaning up and repairing water damage, such delays can prevent your company from completing the job on time and on budget.
Install and test water pipes early in the construction process. If they are installed properly, there will likely be no need for water pipe repair later. Additionally, do not install water-sensitive materials before the building envelope is complete. Make sure you know which materials can handle exposure to the elements and which cannot.

Stringent Quality Control
No matter where you are in the building process, it is important to have rigorous quality checks in place. All plans and specifications should be peer-reviewed before beginning. Large projects may require a full team devoted to quality control. Smaller projects may only need one or two people doing quality checks. Regardless of who oversees quality control, make sure that every task is done properly and in-full before moving forward.
A flooded job site is a nightmare. However, making sure projects are completed in the right order and with attention to detail can minimize the need for water pipe repair and other damage-restoration procedures.

How To Banish Mold

11/4/2020 (Permalink)

Technician in PPE removing mold from wall Mold can grow in as little as 48 hours after water damage.

Mold is a persistent fungus that can form and spread with surprising speed. Mold growth can occur when a surface is exposed to moisture, such as with water damage. Mold will cause your Denver, CO business to look unkempt and unwelcoming. Here are some helpful tips for dealing with mold, wherever you are in the remediation process.

Keep Things Dry and Well-Monitored

Mold forms in conditions when water or humidity is present. Keeping a space well-ventilated with fans and open windows is key to preventing fungal growth. Mold is also attracted to dirt, so good housekeeping goes a long way.

Consistent monitoring is another important factor. Regularly inspect the property for any precursors to water damage and unwanted moisture, such as leaky pipes, plumbing issues, and improper drainage.

Work Quickly in the Mold Window

In the event of a flood or burst pipe, mold can start to grow within 24-48 hours. This window is a crucial time for mold prevention. Once it forms, it starts feeding off of organic matter and shooting off spores that cause rapid mold growth. You’ll want to remove the foothold that mold depends on, starting with extracting any water completely and quickly. A dehumidifier should be used, as open windows won’t cut it when there’s already excess moisture. Immediately toss out any carpet or insulation that has been soaked. Even if the building appears to be dry, it helps to enlist professionals who can locate inconspicuous areas of standing water.

Enlist the Pros for Cleanup

If mold is already present on a surface, it needs to be removed in order to prevent it from spreading. This is a task best left to professionals, as mold is tricky to get rid of. A professional mold remediation service can locate every affected area, and the pros can quickly and safely eradicate mold from your property.

Mold is a stubborn substance that is living and very active. You don’t want it anywhere near your place of business, and neither do your customers. By taking the necessary precautions in the wake of water damage, you’ll keep your property in tip-top shape.

Situations That Warrant Protection Against Flood Damage

10/21/2020 (Permalink)

Large flood seen from the sky Floods can cover acres of land

You take good care of your commercial property in Denver, CO so that weather and other problems don't damage your building. You properly insulate your pipes and you make sure that gutters are clean and your roof is in good condition. Certain events, however, can flood your building despite even the best preparations. When these situations occur, you may need to have flood insurance to cover the cost of recovery.

Prolonged Storms

If a hurricane hits your area, it doesn't really matter whether your gutters are clean. The storm and the continual rainfall that probably follows may cause certain problems for your property:

• Standing, contaminated water, especially on lower levels
• Damaged equipment and furniture
• Weakened walls, floors or ceilings

Your building may flood and sustain water damage when storms arise. If you have flood insurance, you have a way to pay for remediation services, even if the damage turns out to be extensive.

Melted Snow

Some storms don't cause damage at the time they occur but rather after their effects start to dissipate. When heavy snows start to melt, the runoff has to go somewhere. If there is too much of it or if it melts too quickly, it can flood your building. Your commercial insurance portfolio should contain policies that take this possibility into account.

Busted Dams

Some disasters have little to do with the weather and more to do with the weakening of structures made by humans. Levees and dams are built to control the flow of water and keep it from overtaking an area. When such a structure breaks, the water it releases goes everywhere, including your commercial building. Documenting the event as well as the damage it causes can help your insurance adjuster determine how much your policy should cover.

If you live in an area that floods regularly, regional law may require you to have flood insurance. Even if you don't, however, it's a good idea to have extra coverage just in case you need it.

3 Parts of a Sump Pump and How to Maintain Them

10/20/2020 (Permalink)

Installation of a new sump pump and the removal of the old obsolete rusty one with a high angle view of the pumps and more Maintain your sump pump

When Is It Time For Pump Maintenance?

Is your home in Denver, CO, at risk for basement flooding? If so, you probably have a sump pump installed. These devices may seem complicated, but there are only a few crucial parts to the machine. These need to properly maintained, or else the pump may break and flood your home. If you're unsure if it is time for pump maintenance, contact a professional to schedule an inspection or ask questions.

1. The Float
The float on your sump pump functions in almost the exact way that the float on your toilet does. When water drains into the basin, the float will rise with the water level. Once the water level is high enough, the pump will turn on and begin to dispose of the water. It's crucial that the float is clear of any debris. Otherwise, the pump may not turn on when needed due to weight changes incorrectly perceived by the float.

2. Drain Hose
The drain hose carries water that the pump has removed from your home away from the foundation. It's important that the outflow of this pipe be unobstructed. If there is any dirt or other debris blocking the pipe, it may clog and back up into your basement. This pipe should also extend to at least twenty feet from your home's foundation. In certain circumstances, such as if your home is in a sunken area of land, the pipe must extend further. This is necessary so that the disposed water does not flow back toward the foundation and cause water damage.

3. Sump Pit
The sump pit functions as a water collector. As the lowest point in your home's basement, all water will flow into it. The bottom of the pit should be filled with gravel. The gravel acts as a filter; it prevents debris from entering the pump directly. The gravel should always be visible, and any debris will need to be cleaned out, or the pump may eventually become clogged and not function properly—or burn up.
With a bit of basic knowledge, it is a simple task to maintain your sump pump. It's important that maintenance is carried out, otherwise, your pump can fail you when it is needed most.

The Cost of a Business Interruption Is Covered by Insurance

10/14/2020 (Permalink)

Fire burning boxes in a storage room Be prepared in case your business experiences a fire.

Disaster has struck. It’s a dark day in Denver, CO. Your business has completely shut down. Was it fire or storm damage? It doesn’t matter. There is much to be done between now and the day you can reopen. Unfortunately, there was a lot of damage and reopening is a long way off. While you are assessing the situation, your insurance agent reminds you about the interruption insurance portion of your policy and describes some of the costs that it can cover.

1. Costs Associated With Moving to a Temporary Location

If your business can operate from anywhere and your policy covers it, you can restart your business at a temporary location. This can shorten the business interruption dramatically. It will allow you to continue your operation, keep your customers satisfied and make your employees happy that they still have jobs.

2. Lost Profits But Not Lost Revenue

If your business is profitable and you can document profitability, you will be reimbursed for profit lost. Some people mistakenly believe that interruption insurance covers the insured for lost revenue but that is not the case.

3. Fixed Costs

The government wants you to pay your property taxes. Your landlord expects you to pay the rent. Behind them, there are others standing in line to get paid. They don’t care that you are temporarily out of business.

4. Training Costs

Unless you set up your business to operate at a temporary location, it’s a good bet that you will permanently lose many of your employees. New employees will need to be trained to do the jobs, and training costs money.

5. Other Expenses

There will always be other expenses that don’t fit in the above categories. There could be loan payments, utilities, association dues and contractual obligations.

A Short Interruption Is Good for Everyone
Your insurer wants the interruption insurance payments to end. You want things back to normal. If your repairs include fire restoration, consider bringing in a team of restoration experts. You will be happy you did.

How to Repair a Burst Pipe

10/13/2020 (Permalink)

Bursting pipes can cause a lot of damage in a short amount of time, making them a scary issue for many homeowners. If your home in Denver, CO, is experiencing a pipe burst, chances are you will need to call a plumber to help resolve the issue. In the meantime, you can secure the leak using the following technique.

Fix Broken Pipe Using a Clamp and Sleeve

A clamp and sleeve kit can provide a temporary patch to stop the leak while you wait for remediation experts to arrive. Patch your bursting pipes using the following technique:

  • Shut off the main water line. Use a metallic file or steel wool to smoothen any rough areas around the damaged section of pipe.
  • Position the rubber sleeve so that it is centered over the burst. The clamp's seam should be facing the opposite direction of the break.
  • Position the metal clamps around the rubber sleeve. Use a screwdriver to tighten the clamps.
  • Reopen the water supply to the pipe. Watch carefully for any leaks.

The above technique should temporarily solve the issue while you wait for the plumber to arrive. If it doesn't fix the leak, simply repeat the process and reposition the clamp until it solves the issue.

Dry the Water
As soon as you stop the leak, you need to start drying the water. Standing water can quickly cause a lot of secondary damage, such as mold growth, so it's important that you act quickly. If the leak was small, you can resolve the issue by mopping up the water with a towel. Larger leaks that create a lot of water damage likely require professional assistance.
It's important that you take immediate action to fix bursting pipes as soon as you discover it. The subsequent water damage can wreck havoc on your home and cause several subsequent issues. Contact water remediation experts for help assisting with damage cleanup.

The Cost Difference Between Mitigation and Restoration During a Flood

10/7/2020 (Permalink)

Furnace flood in basement Flooding can cause major damage to your business.

Floods continue to be the most prevalent and expensive natural disaster in America. While preventative measures provide quicker and less expensive alternatives to the cost of hiring a flood cleanup company, many property owners do not mitigate against flood damage. This results in high costs and a lengthy restoration process.

Flood Prevention

One of the best preventative recommendations for flood damage is flood insurance, which property owners may purchase through the National Flood Insurance Program, managed by the Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration (FIMA), for an average of $700 per year.

Some other preventative methods include the following:

• Sealing basement walls with compounds that are waterproof
• Installing reflux valves to prevent drains from backing up
• Moving heat and electrical sources to higher levels
• Backing up data to the cloud
• Making a flood plan, including work-from-home opportunities

Once in place, these measures offer protection, year after year. Even better, property owners can usually have the cost partially or fully covered by FIMA.

Flood Cleanup

In contrast, property owners who did not take preventative measures must hire a flood cleanup company out of pocket. Every day the business is closed is a day of income lost, while the company may have salaried staff to pay.

Drying out the business may take the restoration company a few days, and this can only begin after the flood waters recede. Restoration to pre-flood conditions may only require an additional few days, but in worst case scenarios, it may take a business a while to completely rebuild. Not surprisingly, FEMA estimates that 40 percent of small businesses, many of which do not invest in preventative measures, fail to recover from natural disasters.

When it comes to flood damage, prevention is always better than a cure. Sure, a reputable flood cleanup company may restore your place of business in a matter of days, but investing in proactive measures is the best approach to natural disasters in Denver, CO.

3 Parts To Check When a Commercial Toilet Keeps Running

10/2/2020 (Permalink)

Plumbing in the basement of a building Being prepared is the best way to deal with damage.

Your Denver, CO commercial building’s toilets need to run efficiently for the comfort of your employees and customers. However, when a plumbing issue like a toilet overflow happens, it can be unpleasant for everyone. This problem may be caused by a variety of issues, but some can be fixed without the assistance of a plumber. If a toilet keeps running, there are several parts you can check before you call in a flood damage and cleanup service to ensure your bathrooms are properly dried and deodorized after an overflow.

1. The Gasket

Once you turn off the water, the first step to take is to open the winter flushometer. This is the part that causes a commercial toilet to flush efficiently. Use a screwdriver and a wrench to remove this unit’s lid. The gasket is usually located directly under the lid. If it contains a lot of debris or buildup, carefully remove and clean the gasket thoroughly.

2. The Weep Hole

A commercial toilet’s weep hole controls its suction, so when it gets clogged, this may affect water flow and cause a continuous flush. When you remove the toilet’s gasket, take a close look at this small hole. Clean it carefully with a slim tool and ensure all the sediment and other debris is cleared out. This may stop a toilet from flushing constantly and prevent a future toilet flood.

3. The Flange Cover

If this part is loose or corroded, it may be affecting the unit’s proper operation and contribute to a toilet overflow. Note how much water you find under the cover. If there is enough to run over when you remove it, there may be a leak in the gasket or the cover might be faulty, and one or both could need replacing.

When your Denver, CO commercial building experiences a toilet overflow, it can be embarrassing and unpleasant. However, you may be able to repair it by checking and cleaning a few important parts inside the unit to prevent future floods.

5 Steps To Avoid Bathroom Mold

Five Steps To Unwanted Humidity Problems In Your Home

When left in a moist environment, bathroom mildew can begin forming in as little as 24-48 hours. Luckily, you can avoid having this happen to your home in Denver, CO, by keeping your bathroom dry between uses. Most moisture problems come from the bathroom itself, but problems can also stem from your ventilation system. If you have a swamp cooler, be sure it is not adding to moisture problems throughout your home. There are five things you can do to help ensure your home is free from an unwanted humidity problem.

1. Run Bathroom Fans
Always run the bathroom fans while showering or bathing. Fans are designed to wick excess moisture from the air. For best results, let the fans continue to run for 30 minutes after you are done bathing.

2. Keep Areas Clean and Dry
When cleaning your bathroom, remember to clean the tiles and grout too. To keep water from accumulating, you may want to use a squeegee on the shower walls and doors after each use.

3. Clean Your Swamp Cooler
Clean your unit regularly to make sure water does not have a chance to sit for too long. Cleaning ducts and drip pans should be a part of your regularly scheduled chores.

4. Repair Your Swamp Cooler
If your swamp cooler is leaking, get it fixed immediately. The water inside cooling units can cause condensation to form, which can drip and lead to mold problems, which can eventually lead to more bathroom mildew.

5. Run a Dehumidifier
Swamp coolers use evaporated moisture to cool down your home. The evaporated moisture can become too much, making your whole house feel humid. When this moisture is combined with regular bathroom humidity, it can cause a mold problem. You can reduce the moisture inside your home by using a dehumidifier.
If your bathroom mildew keeps coming back despite your best cleaning efforts, call a professional mold remediation company for help. Experts can quickly identify the source of the problem and return your home to its pre-mildew condition.

Getting Standing Water Out of Your Building

Flood waters outside with sandbags setup to prevent flood from spreading Floods can cause serious damage

When a storm passes through Denver, CO, you never know what to expect. Your commercial building could be left untouched, or you may have to deal with standing water in your lower levels. When the damage is more severe, you have to know what to do next. Calling in a storm restoration professional can help you react quickly and smartly. Removing standing water from a building requires the use of special equipment and fast actions.

Know What To Use

Standing water can lead to major structural problems and mold growth if allowed to linger in your building for too long. Because the issues can be huge, you need to know what equipment to use. Often, this type of remediation requires the following:

• Truck mounts
• Trash pump
• Dehumidifiers

This commercial-grade machinery can pump out liquids, sludges and solids, which means you don't have to worry about sifting through the dirty water to let the machine run smoothly. Instead, the professionals come in, hook up the hoses and start pumping out your unwanted water.

Know How To Prepare

Once the water has been drained out of your building, you likely don't want to repeat the process ever again. While the professionals can do a good job of helping you dry out the space, it requires a lot of work and can cause your business to lose production time. You can reduce the chances of standing water filling up your building after a storm by installing a sump pump. This pump sits in a hole and works to remove water as it starts to fill up a space. In other words, it works to stop flooding before it leads to standing water.

Storms can often leave you surprised. No one expects to find two feet of standing water in his or her building, but it does happen. If you ever find this unpleasant surprise on your property, you need to hire someone who has the equipment needed to remediate it.

Damaged walls after a kitchen grease fire A grease fire can quickly consume and devastate your kitchen if left unchecked

Kitchen and other cooking related infernos are the number one cause of residential fires in the United States. Most of these fires are ignited by grease. Because these incidents are so common, it's important that you learn how to put out a grease fire. Follow the checklist below if your kitchen in Denver, CO, falls victim to a kitchen fire.

Putting Out Grease Fires

Knowing how to respond to these types of incidents quickly and effectively could potentially save you from succumbing to disaster. To put out a kitchen fire:

  • Prevent the fire from spreading further by covering it with a metal pan, pot lid or baking sheet.
  • Turn off the cooktop, or whichever other heat source is supplying the fire.
  • If the fire is small, extinguish it by pouring salt or baking soda over the flames.
  • Use a fire extinguisher as a last resort if the flames are too difficult to control.

Your first instinct might be to pour water over the grease fire, but this won't help remediate the situation. You should also never attempt to move the pot or pan that the fire originated from. Doing so can potentially spread the fire or cause painful blisters and burns.

Preventing Cooking Fires
Taking the correct preventative steps can help save you the trouble of having to deal with grease fires and fire cleanup. While your cooktop is active, you need to remain in the room and always keep a careful eye on it. The flames may seem small and manageable, but fire has a tendency to spread quickly. It's also important that you keep combustible objects as far away from your cooktop as possible.
A grease fire can quickly consume and devastate your kitchen if left unchecked. Following fire safety protocol can help prevent kitchen fires. If one does break out, however, utilize the steps in the above checklist to safely extinguish the flames. If you find that you cannot contain the fire, you need to immediately evacuate the house and contact fire remediation experts.

Residential Storm Damage? Take Action Now!

Water containment setup to dry the property Storm restoration specialist can dry your property quickly

Has a recent storm in Denver, CO, caused flood damage to your home? Major storms often arrive with surprisingly little warning, and the aftermath can be devastating for homeowners. Whether you are currently dealing with residential mold or flooding damage, or you’re being proactive by gathering information on how to handle this kind of emergency “just in case,” never assume you need to sit and wait for your flood insurance adjuster.

Why You Shouldn’t Wait

Here are three important reasons why you should not wait on your insurance adjuster after a storm floods your home:

1. You may be waiting a while. It might seem to make sense to wait on your adjuster; after all, he or she is the expert. However, after a large storm hits an area, most adjusters will understandably become extremely busy. Your claim will be one of many, and chances are high that you will have to wait before an adjuster can assess your damage.
2. Damage gets worse with time. When it comes to water damage, the longer you wait, the more harm can be done. The water has more time to seep into your walls, floors and foundation; mold has more time to grow and spread.
3. You don’t have to wait. You can take action right now, regardless of how long it winds up taking your flood insurance adjuster to get to you.

Next Steps

There are so many ways in which water and mold damage can wreak havoc on your home. Sometimes, the damage may not even be visible. If left untreated, this can lead to highly unpleasant and expensive surprises later. It’s therefore critical you contact professional flood and mold remediation experts as quickly as possible. They can assess your situation and form an immediate plan.

If you’re dealing with damage to your home thanks to a storm in Denver, CO, please don’t wait for your flood insurance adjuster to show up. Call in storm damage restoration specialists immediately.

How Water Affects Common Building Materials

9/10/2020 (Permalink)

Removed water damaged materials Water damaged materials removed from a wall

Large volumes of water can destroy your home’s internal structures. To minimize swelling wood and other forms of destruction, you need to quickly and efficiently remove standing water and eliminate moisture. Understanding how water destroys various building materials can also help you assess the salvageability of water-damaged items inside your home.

Dry-Soaked Objects

Eliminating water and moisture is one of the first steps of the cleanup process and is essential for damage control. You can utilize a variety of methods to expediate drying:

• Open windows
• Use fans and a dehumidifier
• Employ a shop vac to soak up pooled water

Wooden Materials

A common indication of water damage is swelling wood. Wooden structures inside your home that may be influenced by excessive water exposure include:

• Subfloors
• Baseboards and door frames
• Cabinets

When exposed to water, plywood may warp and delaminate. Particleboard can also bloat and distort. As a result, you may need to replace saturated subfloors. However, your ability to salvage wooden items will largely depend on the extent of water exposure.

Drywall Saturation

Both drywall and insulation absorb water. When saturated, drywall becomes soft and weak while insulation loses its R-value, thus reducing its effectiveness. Wet drywall and insulation can also become breeding grounds for mold and mildew. For this reason, saturated drywall and insulation should be promptly removed and replaced once the damaged area is dry.

Carpet Replacement

Like drywall and insulation, carpets and padding absorb water. Because wet carpets can also harbor mold and mildew, drying them quickly is essential. If the floor is extremely saturated, you may need to replace both items.

Professional Assistance

Every home in Denver, CO, is potentially susceptible to water damage. Removing standing water and quickly drying the area is crucial to minimizing destruction, including swelling wood. If your property suffers significant damage, you may want to hire a professional cleanup and restoration team. A licensed plumber can also inspect the water supply line, complete a water pipe repair to the damage and offer suggestions to minimize bursting pipes.

3 Tips for Recovering From Mold Damage

9/10/2020 (Permalink)

Mold growth on a wall Mold can be harmful to you and your family

Owning a home brings about many challenges. Unfortunately, mold is sometimes one of them. If you believe your home in Denver, CO, has damage, you will need to have a mold assessment done. Finding out this type of fungus in your house can be scary, but here are a few tips to help you through the process.

1. Determine the Type of Mold

If you suspect there is mold in your home, it is best to have a professional do a mold assessment. They are better equipped to analyze the sample for you to determine if it is black mold, mildew or one of the other common types of household fungi:

• Alternaria
• Aspergillus
• Chaetomium
• Cladosporium
• Penicillium
• Trichoderma

2. Find the Source

Mold doesn’t just appear for no reason. Cleaning up the spores is of the utmost importance, but they could grow back if you don’t locate the source. Typically, this condition develops because of moisture, and often times the origin is an issue with the air conditioner. Do not attempt to find the problem on your own though. Always let a professional deal with the situation.

3. Make a Plan

Once the problem has been looked at and the source has been found, the remediation experts can tell you the cost and timeline for the clean-up. It is very likely that you will not be able to stay in your home during this time, so you may need to make alternate arrangements for your family.

You should also speak to your insurance company and determine what type of coverage you have for mold and come up with a payment plan. Make sure that the source of the problem is taken care of during this time so that you don’t end up encountering the same issue down the road.

Water damage in your home is overwhelming, but always hire remediation experts before you try to do a mold assessment yourself. They are trained to deal with these situations and will be able to help guide you through this process.

Why Is Mold Coming Back Even After Cleaning?

9/10/2020 (Permalink)

Mold growth on a wall Mold damage in Denver, CO

Why Does Mold Keep Coming Back?

Mold growth, when properly treated, should not reappear. Why, then, do some commercial owners in Denver, CO, continually see spots and smells reappear even though they've cleaned the area? It's often because only surface level cleaning occurred, leaving the root cause of the infestation unattended. To successfully eradicate the contamination, proprietors should consider the following three things.

1. Is There a Moisture Concern?
When high humidity exists, spores continue to breed, feeding off of the water and organic material. Have the indoor air quality checked by a water and mold restoration company. Ideally, the atmosphere should remain between 30 to 60%. If anything is amiss, the specialists can determine if something should be adjusted. In addition, continuously run the air conditioner and use dehumidifiers to establish a dry environment that starves out the microbes.

2. Has a Leak Gone Unfixed?
Your mold growth could pop back up because the original water source wasn't repaired. Pipes can have drip inside the walls, permitting dampness to accumulate. The fungus then has a hidden feed supply, multiplying where others cannot see. A leak detection service could identify the trouble. You'll want to shut off the water supply until it's corrected. As long as this exists, fungi can survive.

3. Did Spores Survive the Initial Cleanup Procedure?
If you scrubbed off the spots or used a commercial pray cleaner, you may have eradicated the external signs of growth; however, you did not really get rid of the issue. Water damage seeps into porous materials such as carpets and drywall. Traditional chemicals cannot necessarily eliminate all of the organisms. If fragments are left, they can thrive, popping up later on. Have professionals extricate any saturated zones and apply antimicrobial spray to sanitize the affected sections.
Don't underestimate mold growth. To effectively treat the situation, you'll need to locate the reason it started and then remove anything major impacted.

How To Classify Water Damage At A Commercial Property

The three most common sources of Category Two water damage are flooded toilets, leaking appliances, and plumbing problems that require water pipe repair. Gray water does not contain solid waste, but biological, chemical, and physical contaminants are probably present. Here are a few guidelines for classifying water damage at a commercial property in Denver, CO.

Contaminated Gray Water

Category Two water damage is less contaminated than Category Three damage but still requires sanitation during cleanup. Any of the following water systems have the potential to cause a Category Two leak:

  • Building controls
  • Dishwashing appliances
  • Equalization tanks
  • Handwashing sinks
  • Laundry facilities
  • Showers
  • Toilets

The microorganisms present in Category Two water may pose health and safety risks to the occupants of any commercial building. If leaking or standing water contains chemicals or has been exposed to biological hazards, disinfection will be necessary.

Disinfection and Cleaning
Commercial- or consumer-grade disinfectants can be used to kill microbes and pathogens that pose health risks. Regularly maintaining appliances, building systems and plumbing reduces the risk of Category Two damage. It is unlikely that a broken pipe or incident that requires water pipe repair will cause this type of damage unless it involves a sewer line break or backup. Supply lines carry clean, treated water, and initially cause Category One water damage.

Drying and Prevention
It may be possible to accelerate drying with fans or a dehumidifier. After water damage is restored, it may be possible to prevent flooded toilets, which are a common source of Category Two damage, by posting signage in bathrooms about only flushing toilet paper and providing alternate disposal methods for sanitary products.
If you are not sure about the quality of water leaking or standing in a building in Denver, CO, arrange for damage cleanup professionals to inspect the property and water pipe repair. These specialists have experience in restoring water damage.

What Flood Water Does to Your Business

Flood damage comes in many forms, and there are more causes of concern than property destruction. For one, flood water is classified as black water and contains a range of contaminants such as sewage and bacteria. Some ways to protect your employees from these contaminants include:

  • Using personal protective equipment such as eyewear and gloves
  • Safely removing damaged furniture from the property
  • Hiring an inspector to search for damage in vents, insulation, and other unseen areas

As a high-risk material, black water should be handled by a professional team. Until an inspection and cleaning can be carried out, you should close off damaged areas of your business from your employees.

How to Recover From a Flood
Professional storm remediation teams can help your business recover from flooding. In addition to having the tools to properly dry and repair impacted areas, a team also has the expertise to determine if the company is salvageable. Furniture or insulation may be so severely damaged by black water that the safest choice is to dispose of them. This will prevent further damage to your business in the form of mold growth.

Reducing the Severity of Damage

The contaminants in flood water can promote bacterial growth and cause major financial losses down the line. It is important to have your business, even before a flood occurs. In identifying potential weak spots, you can safeguard the property so that the flood damage is much less severe.

If you believe you have fungus growing in your home in Denver, CO, you should have a mold inspection done right away. Black mold, also known as Stachybotrys, is one of the more dangerous types you can encounter. You’ve probably heard the term but may not know that much about it. Here are some things you should know about Stachybotrys.

1. It Comes in Different Colors

You may be surprised to learn that black mold is not always black. It often appears as dark green or even gray. It is usually slimy due to the moisture that causes it to grow. If it is Stachybotrys, you’ll probably notice a distinct smell. A mold inspection done by a remediation expert may tell you exactly what type of fungi it is though.

2. It Requires Moisture

Mold requires moisture to grow. This is why you were probably told not to leave wet towels on the floor; it can actually lead to spores growing in your bathroom. HVAC systems are often the cause of the problem, so it is important to have them checked regularly. You don’t have to have a leak for there to be growth though. Mold can form if your house is too humid, so keep an eye on the moisture level in your home.

3. It’s Not That Common

Stachybotrys is actually not a common type of house mold. Because it is one of the more dangerous types and many people have heard of it, it is believed to be more prevalent than it is. You are far more likely to find Cladosporium or Penicillium in your home, but a professional can tell you what type you are looking at.

Mold is not something you should be constantly stressing about, but it is important to stay informed and know what to look out for. Always deal with moisture problems right away and call a professional to do a mold inspection if you believe there is an issue in your home.

Kitchen fire in Denver CO Kitchen fires can be avoided

Many people in Denver, CO, love to cook. But even seasoned chefs sometimes make costly mistakes. Here are five helpful ways to avoid kitchen hazards such as a drain clog or grease fire.

1. Keep Your Vents Clean

It’s important to keep the vent screens above your stove clean. Otherwise grease can build up on the screen and inhibit the ventilation becoming a contributing factor in a kitchen fire. The grease build-up could even make a fire worse.

2. Don’t Leave Pans Unattended

Most cooks know never to lean a pan unattended on the stove. The pan could be knocked over, grease can splatter, or the food can be allowed to cook too long. Each of these things can be a fire hazard.

3. Don’t Put Grease Down the Drain

When you're done cooking it may be tempting to pour the hot grease down the drain. Built up grease in drain can lead to a drain clog and sink overflow. Instead the grease can be poured into a container, allowed to cool and then placed in the trash.

4. Wipe Out Greasy Pans Before Washing

Wipe out any remaining grease and food particles before washing your pans. This can help prevent buildup that may lead to a sink clog.

5. Call a Professional to Service Appliances

If you’re having problems with your stove or drain it may be time to call a professional. They will know how to fix the problem without causing a potential electrical fire. These can come from attempting to fix a broken stove or clogged dish disposal without the correct tools. If fire or flooding does occur, then a fire and water damage restoration service may be able to help.

Following these tips can help you prevent problems like a drain clog or grease fire. Never leave your stove unattended when it’s on, don’t put grease down the drain, and call a professional if your kitchen appliances need maintenance. In the event a fire or flooding does happen in your kitchen, then a restoration professional may be able to help.
