Fire steps to be aware of Denver Co

1/3/2023 (Permalink)

Google review Google review

In the event of a fire, it is important to be aware of potential dangers in order to stay safe.

First, be sure to evacuate the area immediately and get to a safe location.

If you are trapped, stay low to the ground where the air is cooler and less likely to be filled with smoke. If possible, cover your mouth and nose with a wet cloth to help filter the air.

If you must evacuate through smoke, crawl low under the smoke to avoid inhaling harmful fumes. Finally, avoid re-entering a burning building as it can collapse at any time.

If you have been affected by a fire, be sure to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

If your home or business has been damaged by fire, you need to hire a certified fire damage restoration company to restore your property.

A certified fire damage restoration company will have the experience and expertise to properly assess the damage and develop a plan to restore your property to its preloss condition.

They will also have the necessary equipment and resources to properly execute the restoration.

Any disaster can take a toll on a home or business but perhaps nothing is more devastating than the effects of a fire.

Fires usually strike suddenly and cause a wide range of damage, which can leave you reeling and unsure of where to turn for help. As desperate as you may feel, it’s important to know that you can turn to SERVPRO for the safest fire restoration services in the Denver area.

As beautiful as Denver is, it’s hard to think about something as awful as fire striking, but unfortunately it can occur at any time.

For the many residents of the area, it’s essential to have a professional restoration company to rely on when a fire occurs so that you know you’re in good hands.

Understanding The Full Scope of Fire Damage

Of course the immediate picture most people have of fire damage is burned and broken belongings, scorched structures and melted plastics caused by the extreme heat of flames.

Sadly, in terms of fire damage that only begins to scratch the surface. There is much more to fire damage and all of it has to be taken into consideration when performing safe and thorough restoration services.

Flames bring along the added hazard of smoke and soot, both of which can permeate surfaces and cause health effects. In order to thoroughly restore fire-damaged property, a careful and exacting cleaning process is required, using professional quality equipment and specialized training.

Professionals will also need to assess each item to determine if it is capable of being restored or will need to be discarded.

Surprisingly, when it comes to fire damage the single most harmful factor is actually water. While water is essential for putting out fires, it can also compound the damage to homes, businesses and belongings from the fire itself and may lead to rotting of support systems as well as mold growth and infestation if it is not addressed quickly and thoroughly.

Fire Restoration Process in the Denver Co Area

smoldering-wood-burning-Servpro-Denver-North We can help when and where you need us

There is nothing more scary, confusing, and disorienting than the aftermath of a fire. Fire strikes without warning and can destroy a home or business in an instant, leaving you to pick up the pieces and try to figure out how to put things back together.

Fires can still occur here and when they do it’s important to know who you can rely on for help.

Unfortunately, fire damage can also be a reality of life here and that can include everything from the destruction caused by flames, smoke, and soot to the added issues that come with water from broken pipes, rain, or firefighting efforts.

For residents and business owners in the Denver area, SERVPRO is the fire restoration contractor you can count on to help you navigate the stressful process of dealing with all kinds of fire damage.

At SERVPRO we provide thorough, safe, and professional fire restoration for homes and commercial properties and we always take pride in responding faster to any disaster.

Fire Damage Restoration That Has You Covered

Unlike other types of disasters, the damage caused by fires is wide-ranging and can be absolutely devastating.

The extreme heat of flames can destroy everything in its path, from furniture and valuables to the support structure of a building itself. Similarly, smoke and soot left behind in the wake of flames can cling to wood, plastic, carpets, and fabrics and cause health effects.

At the same time, water can also cause its own range of issues, from weakening support structures to destroying furniture and building materials and rotting wood. The longer it remains standing, the more serious that destruction can become and the greater the chances of a mold infestation developing.

In fact, mold can begin spreading within the first 48 hours after damage occurs, so speed truly is of the essence.

Turn To The Professionals

When fire strikes, dealing with the aftermath can seem overwhelming and that’s exactly why you should never try to handle restoration by yourself. In order to ensure that your property is treated with the utmost care and precision, you need to call on the professionals like those at SERVPRO who are trained to handle any size job and help get you back on your feet again as quickly as possible.

The chimney of an old home is shown with smoke coming out of it. We are leaders in fire damage restoration in Denver.

SERVPRO® of Denver North wants everyone in Whittier to be safe from fire damage this winter season. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), more fires occur during December, January, and February than at any other time of the year. Here are some heating equipment safety tips from the NFPA:

Fireplace Safety

  • Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from the fireplace
  • Have a three-foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters
  • Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional
  • Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month

Wood Stove Safety

  • Install wood-burning stoves following the manufacturer’s instructions or have a professional do the installation. All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside to avoid carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

More fires happen during the winter months than at any other time of the year in Downtown Denver. SERVPRO® of Denver North offers these fire safety tips from the American Red Cross:

  • Know how to operate a fire extinguisher safely
  • Remember to GET OUT, STAY OUT and CALL 9-1-1 or your local emergency phone number
  • Yell "Fire!" several times and go outside right away. If you live in a building with elevators, use the stairs. Leave all your things where they are and save yourself.
  • If closed doors or handles are warm or smoke blocks your primary escape route, use your second way out. Never open doors that are warm to the touch.
  • If you must escape through smoke, get low and go under the smoke to your exit. Close doors behind you.
  • If smoke, heat, or flames block your exit routes, stay in the room with doors closed. Place a wet towel under the door and call the fire department or 9-1-1. Open a window and wave a brightly colored cloth or flashlight to signal for help.
  • Once you are outside, go to your meeting place and then send one person to call the fire department. If you cannot get to your meeting place, follow your family emergency communication plan.

Hoarding Situation in Skyland?

9/13/2021 (Permalink)

A home is shown with clutter in a room. We clean fire-hazardous clutter from homes in Denver.

Hoarding trouble in Skyland.

When my tenant died, I was left with a house filled with an amazing amount of clutter. It was apparent I had a hoarding situation on my hands. It was a miracle the house didn't catch on fire. I called SERVPRO® of Denver North, and they sent a team out to remove the contents and clean, sanitize, and deodorize the house.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, hoarding can put first responders in harm's way when they are responding to a fire or other emergency.

How Hoarding Impacts First Responders

  • Hoarding puts first responders in harm’s way
  • Firefighters cannot move swiftly through a home filled with clutter
  • Responders can be trapped in a home when exits are blocked. They can be injured by objects falling from piles.
  • The weight of the stored items, especially if water is added to put out a fire, can lead to building collapse
  • Fighting fires is very risky in a hoarding home. It is hard to enter the home to provide medical care. The clutter impedes the search and rescue of people and pets.

Fire Extinguisher Safety Tips for Clayton?

8/11/2021 (Permalink)

A fire extinguisher is shown. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Denver.

SERVPRO® of Denver North responds to fire damage emergencies every year in Clayton, and we know that some fires can be contained by the use of a fire extinguisher. The National Fire Protection Association offers these tips for using a portable fire extinguisher:

Use a portable fire extinguisher when the fire is confined to a small area, such as a wastebasket, and is not growing; everyone has exited the building; the fire department has been called or is being called, and the room is not filled with smoke.

  • To operate a fire extinguisher, remember the word PASS:
    • Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you, and release the locking mechanism
    • Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire
    • Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly
    • Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side
  • For the home, select a multi-purpose extinguisher (can be used on all types of home fires) that is large enough to put out a small fire, but not so heavy as to be difficult to handle
  • Choose a fire extinguisher that carries the label of an independent testing laboratory
  • Read the instructions that come with the fire extinguisher and become familiar with its parts and operation before a fire breaks out

5 Steps To Take After Commercial Fire Damage

11/8/2020 (Permalink)

Commercial Fire Restoration Process

It can be difficult to keep your cool when a commercial building you own, lease or manage is on fire. Here are five steps to take during the critical period of time between extinguishing a blaze and the start of fire restoration.

1. Contact a Commercial Restoration Service
Get restoration professionals with experience working in commercial environments on site within hours after a fire. Scheduling a timely inspection and obtaining an accurate estimate are helpful for making a fire insurance claim.

2. Prepare To Make a Property Damage Claim
Documenting damage is the most important part of preparing to make an insurance claim. Take photos or videos of every portion of a commercial building affected by fire. Keep in mind that coverage may be available for indirect heat or smoke damage in addition to direct fire damage.

3. Mitigate Fire Damage
Board up any shattered windows, destroyed doors or breached walls. In addition to preventing the elements and debris from entering a structure, these are also good security measures.

4. Secure the Premises
Restricting access to a damaged commercial building until fire restoration takes place can help to keep down costs and manage liability risks. A combination of boards, tarp and fencing should go a long way toward discouraging most trespassers.

5. Start Cleanup Quickly
Fast fire damage and smoke cleaning can limit the severity of primary and secondary damage. It may be necessary to extract standing water left behind after suppression before eliminating smoke, soot and ruined materials.
These five pragmatic measures can guide commercial property owners and managers through the earliest stages of mitigation and cleanup. Relying on a one-stop shop for these services and fire restoration can also expedite the entire process and make it easier to provide insurers with an accurate estimate of the total cost to fix fire damage at a building in Denver, CO.

The Cost of a Business Interruption Is Covered by Insurance

10/14/2020 (Permalink)

Fire burning boxes in a storage room Be prepared in case your business experiences a fire.

Disaster has struck. It’s a dark day in Denver, CO. Your business has completely shut down. Was it fire or storm damage? It doesn’t matter. There is much to be done between now and the day you can reopen. Unfortunately, there was a lot of damage and reopening is a long way off. While you are assessing the situation, your insurance agent reminds you about the interruption insurance portion of your policy and describes some of the costs that it can cover.

1. Costs Associated With Moving to a Temporary Location

If your business can operate from anywhere and your policy covers it, you can restart your business at a temporary location. This can shorten the business interruption dramatically. It will allow you to continue your operation, keep your customers satisfied and make your employees happy that they still have jobs.

2. Lost Profits But Not Lost Revenue

If your business is profitable and you can document profitability, you will be reimbursed for profit lost. Some people mistakenly believe that interruption insurance covers the insured for lost revenue but that is not the case.

3. Fixed Costs

The government wants you to pay your property taxes. Your landlord expects you to pay the rent. Behind them, there are others standing in line to get paid. They don’t care that you are temporarily out of business.

4. Training Costs

Unless you set up your business to operate at a temporary location, it’s a good bet that you will permanently lose many of your employees. New employees will need to be trained to do the jobs, and training costs money.

5. Other Expenses

There will always be other expenses that don’t fit in the above categories. There could be loan payments, utilities, association dues and contractual obligations.

A Short Interruption Is Good for Everyone
Your insurer wants the interruption insurance payments to end. You want things back to normal. If your repairs include fire restoration, consider bringing in a team of restoration experts. You will be happy you did.

What Is Involved in the Fire Cleanup Process?

9/22/2020 (Permalink)

Fire damaged kitchen Fire, smoke, and soot damage are things you will experience after a fire.

A fire in your home in Denver, CO can be devastating, and you are probably likely to want to start the process of cleaning your home. However, there are several steps that are helpful to take when cleaning smoke damage and other forms of damage from a fire in your home.

1. Taking Inventory

After a fire has taken place in your home, one of the first steps in the cleanup process is to take inventory of what damage has occurred. The items in your home as well as the structure of the home itself is examined by restoration professionals. Once you have an idea of what is damaged in your home, it is likely that you will have an estimate of how long the cleanup and restoration will take.

2. Cleaning

Once an assessment of your home has been made, the process of smoke cleaning and removing soot damage and smoke damage can begin. Many of your personal belongings, including clothes, photos and electronics can often be restored. Generally, a restoration company can help to determine the best methods to clean your belongings. If there is not a great amount of structural damage that has occurred, the process of cleaning may not take a great amount of time.

3. Removing Residual Odors

In addition to damaging items in your home, smoke can leave a lingering scent. While masking the odor with sprays or other products may be seen as a short-term solution, the smoke smell is likely to return. Methods to help remove the smell of smoke in your home can include replacing air filters, thoroughly sanitizing carpets, walls and ceilings and replacing the drywall in your home. Kitchen and other cooking related infernos are the number one cause of residential fires in the United States. Most of these fires are ignited by grease. Because these incidents are so common, it's important that you learn how to put out a grease fire. Follow the checklist below if your kitchen in Denver, CO, falls victim to a kitchen fire.

Putting Out Grease Fires

Knowing how to respond to these types of incidents quickly and effectively could potentially save you from succumbing to disaster. To put out a kitchen fire:

  • Prevent the fire from spreading further by covering it with a metal pan, pot lid or baking sheet.
  • Turn off the cooktop, or whichever other heat source is supplying the fire.
  • If the fire is small, extinguish it by pouring salt or baking soda over the flames.
  • Use a fire extinguisher as a last resort if the flames are too difficult to control.

Your first instinct might be to pour water over the grease fire, but this won't help remediate the situation. You should also never attempt to move the pot or pan that the fire originated from. Doing so can potentially spread the fire or cause painful blisters and burns.

Preventing Cooking Fires
Taking the correct preventative steps can help save you the trouble of having to deal with grease fires and fire cleanup. While your cooktop is active, you need to remain in the room and always keep a careful eye on it. The flames may seem small and manageable, but fire has a tendency to spread quickly. It's also important that you keep combustible objects as far away from your cooktop as possible.
A grease fire can quickly consume and devastate your kitchen if left unchecked. Following fire safety protocol can help prevent kitchen fires. If one does break out, however, utilize the steps in the above checklist to safely extinguish the flames. If you find that you cannot contain the fire, you need to immediately evacuate the house and contact fire remediation experts.

Kitchen fire in Denver CO Kitchen fires can be avoided

Many people in Denver, CO, love to cook. But even seasoned chefs sometimes make costly mistakes. Here are five helpful ways to avoid kitchen hazards such as a drain clog or grease fire.

1. Keep Your Vents Clean

It’s important to keep the vent screens above your stove clean. Otherwise grease can build up on the screen and inhibit the ventilation becoming a contributing factor in a kitchen fire. The grease build-up could even make a fire worse.

2. Don’t Leave Pans Unattended

Most cooks know never to lean a pan unattended on the stove. The pan could be knocked over, grease can splatter, or the food can be allowed to cook too long. Each of these things can be a fire hazard.

3. Don’t Put Grease Down the Drain

When you're done cooking it may be tempting to pour the hot grease down the drain. Built up grease in drain can lead to a drain clog and sink overflow. Instead the grease can be poured into a container, allowed to cool and then placed in the trash.

4. Wipe Out Greasy Pans Before Washing

Wipe out any remaining grease and food particles before washing your pans. This can help prevent buildup that may lead to a sink clog.

5. Call a Professional to Service Appliances

If you’re having problems with your stove or drain it may be time to call a professional. They will know how to fix the problem without causing a potential electrical fire. These can come from attempting to fix a broken stove or clogged dish disposal without the correct tools. If fire or flooding does occur, then a fire and water damage restoration service may be able to help.

Following these tips can help you prevent problems like a drain clog or grease fire. Never leave your stove unattended when it’s on, don’t put grease down the drain, and call a professional if your kitchen appliances need maintenance. In the event a fire or flooding does happen in your kitchen, then a restoration professional may be able to help.
